In the movie Braveheart, William Wallace's (Mel Gibson) wife was killed in front of him. His life changed in that very second and he had a choice to make. He made it. That choice took him many different places, brought hardship, and eventually death. But one thing he voiced over and over again... "Freedom." He wanted the freedom to choose. He wanted the freedom to explore his options, to marry the woman of his choice, to live in harmony with his neighbors without the threat of England taking something that was his..
We too are like William Wallace. When faced with change, we have choices to make, and we expect to have the freedom to make them. Like William, we all reap the consequences of those choices be it good or bad. Some of us sail right on through while others just seem to drown in the aftermath. Change and choices are not bad things... in fact, I think they are both exciting and rewarding.
When you think of choices, do you think of God? God gave us tastebuds. Little tiny tastebuds. Why? Because those tiny tastebuds allow us to taste the huge variety of foods he created for us. He could have just created one form of food and it could have tasted like cardboard. We could have been born without tastebuds and we would never have missed eating something that tasted like cardboard. But no! God chose to make fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, dairy, sweets, etc. Each one of those catagories has subcatagories and it has subcatagories. Then he creates us with tastebuds so that we can taste the difference in each of the different foods. It is pleasing, exciting, tantalizing. God created us to enjoy variety, so why shouldn't we expect variety when it comes to our lives? We don't watch the same tv show every night over and over again. We don't eat the same food over and over and over. We don't listen to one song over and over and over again.
No, we experience variety every day and with that variety of options comes choices. We chose between foods, songs, friends, events, shows, movies, and so forth. We make more choices than any one I know the moment we step foot into a grocery store!
When we have variety, we have to make a choice. We can either complain and whine, or we can hitch up our big adult pants and make a choice. Do we whine AFER we make a choice? Do we complain about our options? Shoot people..... at least we HAVE choices and options. I challenge all of you out there to take joy in the fact that there are options, choices, and freedom. Once William made his decision, there was no looking back. He simply stepped forward and continued. He remained focused and determined.
Remember to pray to God for wisdom in making a good decision, seek godly counsel, and then decide. Just do it. Then move on. Remember to thank God for his help, for his faithfulness, and for the freedom to trust him.
