Sunday morning we discussed the resurrection and how it affects our lives today. One of the comments made was about the burial garments. The linen strips and the head covering were separated but they were folded and laid neatly aside.
I never noticed the word “folded” before. It snagged my attention and I stopped for awhile and thought about it. A robber would not have taken the time to fold the cloth. Who actually takes the time to do such a thing when robbing a tomb? Now I haven’t gone cow-tipping and I haven’t gone grave robbing, but I can assume when one is out doing such deeds that speed, secrecy, and some carelessness is inevitable.
These garments were folded. Separated and folded. There was purpose to the action. There was a sense of order, calmness, and understanding of what was going to happen and there was plenty of time to get it done. Otherwise the cloths would have been all crumpled up and tossed aside.
I am soothed by the notion that Jesus had a plan, followed the plan, and was calmly going about finishing things up while he was still on the earth. Each action was purposeful.
Lord, may my actions be purposeful. May I seek your will before each day and act with calmness and determination. May I too find a sense of order in my possessions, my work and my life. You are the son of the Living God and you will help me to do the things you have prepared in advance for me to do. May I be a willing vessel…
