Have I Told You Lately?

I’m sure that the lyrics of today’s songs mean something to some people – but I just can’t get into them. I remember my parents listening and singing to Top 40 music when I was growing up but I don’t sing to the radio anymore. I can’t stand the music and the lyrics are filthy.

Now filthy lyrics aren’t just a problem with today’s music, I can remember some bleeped out parts during the 70’s and the 80’s, the closet references to deeds done in private and then there were the blatant “makin’ love in my Chevy van” and “afternoon delight” songs too. But where are the uplifting loving lyrics today?

I was listening to Van Morrison’s song, “Have I Told You Lately?” and I heard some beautiful words of love and felt a pang. The pang was because teenagers and twenty-somethings are missing the positive aspects of love and commitment as mentioned in Van Morrison’s song.

Here is a sample:

Have I told you lately that I love you?
Have I told you there's no one above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away my sadness
Ease my troubles that's what you do

Oh, the morning sun in all it's glory
Greets the day with hope and comfort too
And you fill my life with laughter, you can make it better
Ease my troubles that's what you do

There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine
Like the sun at the end of the day
We should give thanks and pray to the One

Say, have I told you lately that I love you?
Have I told you there's no one above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away my sadness
Ease my troubles that's what you do

Folks, that's beautiful. That is what life and being in love is all about.
